The NY Book Launch for
Altered States: Buddhism and Psychedelic Spirituality in America
With author Douglas Osto & host Christopher Kelley
Since the 1960s several well-known (and countless more unacknowledged) Americans have discovered Eastern religion in the wake of a psychedelic experience. The story of Ram Das (aka Richard Albert) trading LSD for Hinduism is a popular “door-opener” narrative that has been adopted by many American Buddhists. A more elusive cohort of “psychedelic Buddhists” believe that psychoactive substances, like LSD and psilocybin, can be used to support and augment Buddhist practice.
This situation is further complicated by the cultural stigma generated by the so called drug war and enduring political associations stemming from the American counter-cultural movement.
The Alchemist’s Kitchen is very pleased to present the New York City book launch of Altered States: Buddhism and Psychedelic Spirituality in America by Dr. Douglas Osto. We invite you to join us, in conversation with the author and host Dr. Christopher Kelley, as we probe the cultural and social significance of psychedelics on the introduction and continued development of contemporary American Buddhism.
